STAFFORD LOANS

Stafford Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized) are made through one of two programs: William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans) Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL Loans) It is possible for you to receive both Direct and FFEL Stafford Loans but not for the same period of enrollment. A Direct Stafford Loan is repaid directly to the U.S. Department of Education. A FFEL Stafford Loan is repaid to the bank or private lender that made you the loan.

Whether you (or your parents) receive a Direct or a FFEL Stafford Loan depends on which program the school you attend participates in. Most schools participate in one or the other, although some schools participate in both.
